Choosing the right airport can save you time and money. It can also help you start your vacation stress-free. In this guide, we will break down your best flight options so you can head straight to our beautiful vacation rentals in Tennessee.

The Winner: McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS)
If you want the absolute closest airport to the Smoky Mountains, this is it. McGhee Tyson Airport is located in Alcoa, Tennessee. It is just south of Knoxville.
This airport is our top recommendation for guests staying at our Gatlinburg vacation rentals or in Pigeon Forge. It is small, clean, and very easy to navigate. You won’t have to deal with the chaos of a massive city airport.
💡 Quick insight: Even though it is a smaller airport, passenger traffic has bounced back strongly since 2020. This means more flight options are becoming available every year.
McGhee Tyson Airport
This is the most convenient landing spot for a Smoky Mountain vacation. From here, you are only about a 30 to 45-minute drive to Sevierville and roughly an hour from the heart of Gatlinburg.
We love this airport because it feels like you have already arrived in the mountains. The atmosphere is relaxed. You will find rocking chairs inside the terminal, which gives it a true Southern welcome. It is served by major airlines like American, Delta, United, and Allegiant.
- Location: Alcoa, TN (South of Knoxville)
- Drive Time: ~45 minutes to Pigeon Forge
- Why we like it: Shortest drive time to our cabins.
- Car Rentals: All major brands are available right on-site.

The Scenic Option: Asheville Regional Airport (AVL)
Your next best option is usually Asheville Regional Airport. This airport is located in North Carolina. It sits on the other side of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
If you are staying at our Smoky Mountain cabin rentals, this airport is a bit further away than Knoxville. However, the drive is absolutely beautiful. You will drive across the mountains to get to the Tennessee side. Just keep in mind that the drive can take closer to two hours depending on traffic and weather.
Asheville Regional Airport
This is a great choice if you plan to visit the Biltmore Estate or explore North Carolina before heading to your cabin in Tennessee. It is a very user-friendly airport that has seen a lot of recent updates.
Travelers often tell us they enjoy the modern feel of the terminal here. It serves many of the same airlines as Knoxville, including Allegiant, which often has good deals. If you are comfortable with a longer but scenic drive through the mountains, this is a solid pick.
- Location: Fletcher, NC (near Asheville)
- Drive Time: ~1.5 to 2 hours to Gatlinburg
- Why we like it: Great access to the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Major Hubs for Better Flight Deals
Sometimes flying into a small regional airport can be pricey. If you cannot find a direct flight or a good price to Knoxville or Asheville, you might want to look at the big international hubs.
You will have to drive further, but you might save enough money to upgrade your vacation rental or stay an extra night.
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)
Atlanta is one of the busiest airports in the world. Because it is a massive hub, you can find direct flights from almost anywhere.
The drive to the Smokies from Atlanta takes about 3.5 to 4 hours. It is a straight shot north on the highway. We suggest this option if you are coming from the West Coast or international locations. Just be sure to time your arrival to avoid Atlanta rush hour traffic.
- Location: Atlanta, GA
- Drive Time: ~4 hours
- Insight: Often has the cheapest flight prices due to high volume.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT)
Charlotte is another major hub that serves as a good alternative. It is located in North Carolina.
The drive from Charlotte to our Sevierville vacation rentals is usually around 3.5 hours. It is a nice middle ground between the huge size of Atlanta and the smaller regional airports. If you are an American Airlines flyer, this is a major hub for them.
- Location: Charlotte, NC
- Drive Time: ~3.5 hours
- Insight: Look for the white rocking chairs in the terminal for a quick rest.

Other Regional Options to Consider
If the airports above don’t fit your schedule, there are two other options nearby. They aren’t the closest, but they can be very convenient depending on where you are flying from.
Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP): This airport is in South Carolina. It is about a 2.5 to 3-hour drive to the park. It is known for being very easy to get in and out of.
Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport (CHA): Located in Chattanooga, TN, this is about a 2.5-hour drive to the Pigeon Forge area. It is a great option if you want to visit the Tennessee Aquarium or Ruby Falls before heading to the mountains.
Getting From the Airport to Your Cabin
Once you land, you will need a way to get to your cabin. Public transportation in the Smoky Mountains is limited. We highly recommend renting a car.
Having your own car gives you the freedom to explore the national park, visit Dollywood, and drive to dinner in town. All the airports we mentioned have rental car counters on-site.
💡 Local tip: If you fly into Knoxville (TYS), the drive to your cabin is mostly highway until you reach the tourist areas. It is a very straightforward and easy drive.
